GUT & WELLNESS with ayurveda dr. rama prasad handout
What is Ayurveda?
There are many ways to look at it.
Put nutrition, cooking, fasting, feasting, herbal medicine, cleansing, rituals, vitalisers, therapies, power routines, age-reversal and everything healing together and make it sexy - you get Ayurveda.
A 6,000 time-tested wellness and healing system, that is handed over by our grandmothers and ancestors with love for our good life.
The first and most complete medical system.
How is it different to the western tradition?
Western medicine is mainly emergency centred. Eg. Pain > kill it. Tumour > cut it off. Important and unavoidable in emergency.
Ayurveda is about working on the cause and process of disease. If stress is causing your diagnosed condition, we make sure you are safe first, then upgrade your life so that you enjoy superior wellness and happiness - not just removing the symptom or disease. Great for all systemic conditions and some emergency conditions.
The most common cause of gut related problem.
Food, that is not - harvested in the same season, farmed locally with natural fertilisers - is the problem.
Meals that are not - cooked with love, using the traditional method with the time-tested spices and herbs - is the problem.
Eating without - mindfulness, using your five senses and chewing each mouthful 20-40 time - is the problem.
What is Agni?
Agni is the collection of digestive juices that convert food into molecules that your cells can eat effortlessly, that primarily found in your gut, but exist everywhere else. Enzymes, hormones, saliva etc are part of it.
Agni's counterpart is Pachaka-pitta, which is the body temperature and digestive acids such as hydrochloric acid. This breaks down food into smaller particles, so that Agni can transform it.
What is Ayurveda's view on probiotics?
Every traditional day-meal had a tiny bit of probiotics in the form of fermented vegetables etc.
In fact Ayurveda sees every disease as a gut dysfunction. E.g. Arthritis or sinusitis is a symptom of gut dysfunction.
Each disease has a specific nature dysfunction in a specific part of your digestive tract.
Ayurvedic arishtams are high-power probiotics, that is prescribed for almost everyone, as every disease is born in the gut - as a gut dysfunction.
The most common gut related problems?
Generally we think conditions such as Crohn's, autism, colitis, dementia, anxiety, depression etc. are gut related problems.
But, every systemic disease such as dermatitis, gastritis, hepatitis, menopausal difficulties are the sign of a gut dysfunction.
The simplest yet the most overlooked thing with gut health.
Sleep is the most overlooked factor in gut health.
Sleep determines if you digest, assimilate, retain and eliminate food well.
Does everyone need to do a gut detox?
Just a generation back, everyone fasted multiple times monthly. They also flushed their gut once fortnightly or monthly. Now as the stress is getting worse, we need to do it at lease weekly.
Instead of harsh methods, we need to practice gentle and practical methods - thats all.
One advice you would give people to manage their gut health!
Chew. Chew 20 times every mouthful. If you have a health condition 40 times. If its chronic, make it 60 times.
What does it look like if someone wants to manage their gut.
Their meals are regular, they eat with attention, they eat colours, aromas, sounds and textures, they chew lots, they have large breakfasts, medium lunches and light dinners, they shop locally farmed - seasonally harvested - all natural food, they give large breaks between meals.
Lifestyle practices you can recommend.
Everything is connected to everything.
Just a top class nutrition (Appetite Qualities Textures Senses & Flavours) can not help one stay fit.
